Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS) Physician Dr. William Whaley was featured in an article titled “Rare Cancer Treatment Extends Lives,” by Gwinnett Daily Post reporter Leslie Wiggins on February 1, 2006. The article recounted the story of GCS patient Maudenia Reid, who thanks to Dr. Whaley and the intraperitoneal (IP) treatment he administered, has been cancer-free for the past seven years.
IP treatment is a method which pumps cancer drugs directly into the abdominal cavity. The procedure is used in advanced cases of ovarian cancer, and has proven very effective in recent clinical trials, yet many physicians have shied away from it in the past, according to Dr. Whaley.
“Many physicians are timid. They’re cautious. They have been pounded by their colleagues and insurance carriers to worry about if the insurance will pay for it and if it’s something so commonly used…” said Dr. Whaley. “But now the body of evidence has convinced skeptics.”
The findings from the IP clinical trials were so remarkable that the National Cancer Institute issued a clinical announcement to encourage the use of IP in all women who meet its medical criteria. Such an announcement had not been made since 1999.
GCS is the largest private hematology/oncology practice in the Southeast, and is a leader in advanced cancer treatment and research. Dr. Whaley offers comprehensive care at the GCS Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Crawford Long, and Northside offices.
