WSB Fox WSB750Georgia Cancer Specialists Consulted by Major Atlanta Media About New Mammogram Guidelines

Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS) — the largest private medical oncology/hematology practice in the Southeast — was chosen as the source for local expert input on newly released breast cancer screening guidelines by several major Atlanta media outlets, including WSB-TV, News/Talk 750 WSB, and Fox 5.

New recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force advise women to begin getting mammograms at age 50 instead of 40, and to have them every other year instead of annually. It also discourages physicians from teaching women to do breast self-exams.

The government task force of doctors and scientists concluded that getting screened for breast cancer as early as 40 along with the previously recommended frequency (annually) leads to too many false alarms and unnecessary biopsies without substantially improving women’s odds of survival.

Dr. Bruce Feinberg, president and CEO of GCS, was interviewed by Denise Dillon on Fox 5’s 10 p.m. broadcast Monday, November 16. Watch the interview here:

Dr. Feinberg also appeared on WSB AM 750 at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 17. Click here to listen to the interview.

Dr. Mansoor Saleh — principal investigator and director of clinical research at GCS — was featured in multiple evening broadcasts on WSB-TV. Click here to watch the news segment.
