Ardis Young and the Healing Hugs Quilters have given more than 100 handmade quilts to Georgia Cancer Specialists patients. Young, a retired nurse, started giving quilts she had made to friends to keep them warm during chemotherapy treatment.
When she founded the Healing Hugs Quilt Ministry—a group spanning all age groups that meets once a month at the First Baptist Church of Covington—she thought the quilts made during their meetings would bring comfort and hope to cancer patients.
Different members of the group do each quilt in phases, and when finished, each quilt is washed and prepared as a gift for a cancer patient. The group delivers many of their quilts to patients at the GCS-Rockdale office.
One GCS patient who received a quilt from the group had it and the accompanying note framed. It now hangs in the GCS-Rockdale office as a gift to share with all the staff and patients who come into the facility.
