December 7, 2012 (ATLANTA) — Dr. Rodolfo Bordoni of Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS)—a Top 10 private cancer practice in the U.S.— was interviewed by CBS Atlanta’s Jennifer Mayerle for a special report on a new drug that is bringing hope to lung cancer patients. Dr. Bordoni’s patient, Ankit Patel, learned that he had stage IV lung cancer after complaining of shoulder pain. The 29-year-old and his physicians were shocked to find that it was lung cancer, considering he is a non-smoker, is young, and leads a generally healthy lifestyle. Ankit Patel is part of the roughly 15 percent of nonsmoking patients diagnosed with lung cancer. He suffers from a rare genetic mutation referred to as EML4-ALK. Patel takes the targeted therapy drug, Crizotinib, which was approved by the FDA last year. Several GCS patients were enrolled in the clinical research trials of the drug. Dr. Bordoni said, “Just with a single pill one or two times a day, patients go from being in a wheelchair and come to the next consult a month later walking and enjoying life.” Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in this country for men and women, claming more than 150,000 lives each year. Traditionally, people who use tobacco are associated with a lung cancer diagnosis, but more and more nonsmokers have the disease.
