Dr. Bhargava Authors A Review on the Role of HPV in Nongenital Cancers

February 10, 2013 (Athens) — Dr. Ranjana Bhargava of Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS)—a Top 10 private cancer practice in the U.S.— was published in the most recent edition of CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicans sponsored by the American Cancer Society, regarding the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in nongenital cancers.

The review examines how HPV, one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases worldwide, has an established role in the genesis of nongenital cancers including head and neck cancers and anal cancer.

Dr. Bhargava finds it important to spread awareness about HPV and cancer. “Worldwide, the incidence of HPV-associated nongenital cancers has been increasing over time. It is vital to reverse the trend and improve the outcomes of those diagnosed,” she said.

Dr. Bhargava received her medical degree from M. S. Ramaiah Medical College in Bangalore, India. She completed her residency at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. She was awarded the Best Teacher Award during her residency at the University of South Carolina, where she also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Bhargava completed a fellowship in oncology and hematology at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center in Baltimore, MD. Breast cancer, colon cancer, and benign hematology are among her special interests and specialties. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American College of Physicians.
