Rethinking Mother’s Day: Give the Gift of Health

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

I’m not a mom (well, only to a dog), but like all of you, I have a mother and had two grandmothers. Both of my grandmothers died from cancer. Interestingly enough, I’m not sure either could have done much more to reduce her cancer risk intentionally.

Neither of them used tobacco or drank alcohol. They both ate fresh produce from their own gardens. They were both active up until they were diagnosed with cancer, one in her 50’s and the other in her late 70’s. Both were likely cases of unlucky genetics, exposure to chemicals in their environments, or simply aging.

If you are lucky enough to have a mom and/or grandmother around, consider giving a gift to promote good health this Mother’s Day. The suggestions below may not be traditional gifts by any means, but remember: The value of good health is priceless!

1. For a mom or grandmother who enjoys being active:

  • Gym membership

2. For a mom or grandmother who expects your annual bouquet of flowers:

3. For a new mom who is overwhelmed with a newborn:

  • A gift certificate for a massage or pedicure with a voucher for you to babysit while she enjoys the spa

4. For a middle aged mom or grandmother who isn’t so keen on working out:

5. For a mom or grandmother with diabetes:

6. For a mom or grandmother going through cancer treatment or another stressful event:

  • A yoga video or meditation CD to calm her spirit

Of note, none of these companies paid me to advertise for them – I just think they are great options!
